YAHWEH's New Year

And YAHWEH spoke unto Moshe and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying,
This month shall be unto you the beginning of months:
 it shall be the first month of the year to you.

The precise determination of YAHWEH's calendar system of the ancient Hebrew remains one of the major problems of biblical research. The entire Hebrew calendar was constructed upon the pattern of YAHWEH's Feasts, which after the Exile came to assume a fairly rigid form. After the return from Babylonian exile the Hebrews continued to use a solar-lunar calendar, but now the spring new year became more prominent. Although in patriarchal times the Hebrews may have observed a spring new year, it is clear that by the time the monarchy had become established they were beginning both their civil and their religious year at the fall equinox, probably as the result of Canaanite influence. 

The earliest, the pentecontad calendar (called so because of the significant role which the number 50 played in it) was distinctly agricultural in character, directly associated with the successive stages of the annual crop. Its New Year's Day was, quite appropriately, the day of cutting the first sheaf of the new crop. The Interpreter's Dictionary of the Bible

YAHWEH's Word tells us in Bereshith (Genesis) 8:22 "While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease." ONLY two seasons; summer and winter are mentioned. Again in Tehillim (Psalms) 74:17 "You have set all the borders of the earth: you have made summer and winter."  does YAHWEH's Word confirm two seasons. As mentioned above the Hebrew calendar was tied directly to YAHWEH's Feast  Days and the Feast Days were based on the harvest seasons. 

Shemoth (Exodus)13:3-4 And Moshe said unto the people, Remember this day, in which you came out from Egypt, out of the house of bondage; for by strength of hand YAHWEH brought you out from this place: there shall no leavened bread be eaten. This day came you out in the month Abib.

1) fresh, young barley ears, barley
2) month of ear-forming, of greening of crop, 
of growing green Abib, month of exodus and passover (March or April)

Think about spring. The days prior have been dreary, cold and confining. Then the sun becomes a little warmer, the ice and snow begins to melt, and even the brave flowers of daffodils, phlox and jasmine begin to push through the dreariness and bring life.

Have you ever walked on a early spring day to see the animals starting to scurry about looking for signs of new life? Have you ever caught the sent of jasmine from high in a dead barren tree? Can you smell the beautiful scent of the bright yellow trumpet shaped flowers heralding the beginning of something new? So we believe that it is with YAHWEH. Once we were dead and now we see, feel, and hear the life reviving itself from deep in our souls. YAHWEH has started a new year!
