New Covenant Ruach haKodesh Teachings
The Ruach haKodesh and Yochanan's mission
The long-awaited fulfillment of the hope of a general renewal of the prophetic Ruach was seen by YOCHANAN THE BAPTIST to be approaching. Luka, indeed, seeks to show that the events which immediately preceded the work of YAHSHUA and were, in a sense, themselves a part of the message were already taking place in the setting of a new upsurge of the long dormant Ruach of prophecy, prophecy being the inspired announcement of the coming fulfillment, of which the child Yochanan is to be the forerunner.
Elizabeth and Zechariah are "filled with the Ruach Ha Kodesh." Simeon is likewise inspired to recognize MESSIYAH in YAHSHUA and to proclaim his mission to bring light to the Gentiles (the role of the Servant) and honor to Yisrael. Luka 2:25-32 "And, behold, there was a man in Yerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the Consolation of Yisrael: and the Ruach Ha Kodesh was upon him. And it was revealed unto him by the Ruach Ha Kodesh, that he should not see death, before he had seen YAHWEH'S MESSIYAH. And he came by the Ruach into the tabernacle: and when the parents brought in the child YAHSHUA, to do for him after the custom of the Law, Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed YAHWEH, and said, YAHWEH, now let Your servant depart in peace, according to Your Word: For my eyes have seen Your yeshua, Which You hast prepared before the face of all people; A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the honor of Your people Yisrael." This emphasis on a renewal of the Ruach of prophecy as the prelude to the message is peculiar to Luka; but the synoptic tradition agrees in seeing Yochanan himself as a Ruach-filled prophet, MattitYahu 11:9 "But what went you out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet." Markus 11:32 "But if we shall say, Of men; they feared the people: for all men counted Yochanan, that he was a prophet indeed." endowed with the Ruach from before his birth. Luka 1:15 "For he shall be great in the sight of YAHWEH, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Ruach Ha Kodesh, even from his mother's womb." His mission was to prepare a True remnant of Yisrael, by repentance associated with the outward sign of cleansing by baptism in the Yarden to face the coming judgment; it was also a preparation for a future baptism with the Ruach Ha Kodesh, " MattitYahu 3:11 "I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but He that cometh after me is mightier than I, Whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: He shall baptize you with the Ruach Ha Kodesh, and with fire:" Mark 1:8 " I indeed have baptized you with water: but He shall baptize you with the Ruach Ha Kodesh." Luka 3:16 "Yochanan answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but One mightier than I cometh, the latchet of Whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Ruach Ha Kodesh and with fire:" and at least in one aspect the symbolism of His baptism, recalling the metaphorical language in which the Old Covenant prophets had likened the moving of the Ruach to that of water in the desert, fits this preparation.
Hope of an outpouring of the Ruach
Yochanan's baptism, however, was not in itself an effective sign of the fulfillment of the ancient hope of a general outpouring of the Ruach. This hope still lay in the future, though Yochanan himself believed it to be imminent. The last days had not yet dawned, and his mission was no more than a preparation for the fulfillment. The promised outpouring of the Ruach waited, according to the common testimony of the New Covenant writers, until the saving work of MESSIYAH should have been completed. These events were, however, nearer at hand than Yochanan himself at first realized. The baptism with the Ruach Ha Kodesh of which he had spoken actually took place, so far as one of his followers was concerned, when YAHSHUA came to be baptized by him. From that decisive moment the age of hope already began to give place to the age of fulfillment. Hence when Yochanan had received from his messengers the news that the Messianic signs were being visibly enacted, he receded from the scene, as the evangelists understood it, his work of preparation being done and the age of the New Covenant having been ushered in by his prophetic call to Yisrael.
"MattitYahu 11:2-15 "Now when Yochanan had heard in the prison the works of MESSIYAH, he sent two of his disciples, And said unto him, are You He that should come, or do we look for another? YAHSHUA answered and said unto them, Go and show Yochanan again those things which you do hear and see: The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the message preached to them. And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in Me. And as they departed, YAHSHUA began to say unto the multitudes concerning Yochanan, What went you out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind? But what went you out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings' houses. But what went you out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet. For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before Your face, which shall prepare Your way before you. Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than Yochanan the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. And from the days of Yochanan the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force. For all the prophets and the Law prophesied until Yochanan. And if you will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear." Luka 7:18-30 "And the disciples of Yochanan showed him of all these things. And Yochanan calling unto him two of his disciples sent them to YAHSHUA, saying, are You He that should come? or look we for another? When the men were come unto him, they said, Yochanan Baptist hath sent us unto you, saying, are You He that should come? or look we for another? And in that same hour He cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind He gave sight. Then YAHSHUA answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell Yochanan what things you have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the message is preached. And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in Me. And when the messengers of Yochanan were departed, He began to speak unto the people concerning Yochanan, What went you out into the wilderness for to see? A reed shaken with the wind? But what went you out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they which are gorgeously appareled, and live delicately, are in kings' courts. But what went you out for to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet. This is He, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before Your face, which shall prepare Your way before you. For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than Yochanan the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of YAHWEH is greater than he. And all the people that heard Him, and the publicans, justified YAHSHUA, being baptized with the baptism of Yochanan. But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of YAHSHUA against themselves, being not baptized of him." Luka 16:16 "The Law and the prophets were until Yochanan: since that time the kingdom of YAHWEH is preached, and every man pressed into it." In the light of the age of fulfillment, however, Yochanan's mission itself took on something of the character of the message, by anticipation. Mark 1:1"The beginning of the message of YAHSHUA MESSIYAH, the Son of YAHWEH; " Luka 3:18 "And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people."
